Diabetes and Pregnancy |
 |
|
When
a woman with diabetes is expecting, her blood sugar levels can change
rapidly. She may experience the common symptoms of those who do not
know they have diabetes or the symptoms she usually has may get
worse. If the blood sugar levels are not controlled this could lead
to a miscarriage. Wayward sugar levels may also lead to high blood
pressure during pregnancy which could put the baby in risk of being
born prematurely and put the expectant mother in risk of having
seizures or a stroke during labor. Another risk to a pregnant woman
with uncontrolled diabetes is that her baby may grow too large. This
will lead to much discomfort for the woman in the last few months of
pregnancy and can lead to complications during the birth. If a woman
with diabetes is planning to get pregnant or is pregnant the best
thing for both the mother and the baby is careful planning. Regular
visits to the doctor, as well as a meal plan and exercise routine are
the best way to make sure the baby will be safe and to spot any
problems as soon as possible.
